The Lantern Tankard
10-Sided Pint Glass

Whatever the drink, a Lantern lights it up.

The Lantern 10-Sided Tankard was one of the earliest pressed beer serving mugs and was Britain’s beer glass of choice from the 1920’s all the way through to the 1960’s.

Stephensons are proud to be responsible for the resurrection of this forgotten British classic.

Having replaced pewter and pottery drinking vessels as the standard serving mug, the Lantern 10-Sided Tankard also had a marked impact on the quality of the beer served in the pubs of this era. Brewers had to work harder to ensure their beer had greater clarity which was now visible through the glass vessel, while the crafty landlord could no longer sell his customers short measures and get away with it!

The Lantern 10-Sided Tankard was so iconic that it was even featured in the long running “Beer is Best” campaign run by The Brewers’ Society, latterly the British Beer & Pub Association.

The production of the original Lantern 10-Sided Tankard is thought to have originated in the hand pressed glass factories in the North East of England, the most prominent of which was The Crystal Glass Company from Knottingley, West Yorkshire. It was here that The Lantern 10-Sided Tankard was produced from what was then known as ‘Mould No.2’. This lead to The Lantern Tankard being affectionately referred to as “The No.2” by workers, staff and salesmen. The last hand-pressed versions of The Lantern 10-Sided Tankard were produced in Knottingley until its closure in 1978.

The Lantern 10-Sided Tankard’s massive popularity was due to the comfortable feel of the glass in the hand as well as its ability to enhance the flavour and appearance of its contents.
