Simpler Recycling Waste Legislation

Simpler Recycling Waste Legislation

From April 1st 2025, all businesses with more than 10 employees are required to follow the new Simpler Recycling waste legislation. This has been introduced by the government as a more effective approach to recycling at waste management facilities.

Businesses must split their recycling into the following categories:

  • Food waste
  • Mixed recycling (glass, metal, plastic)
  • Paper and cardboard
  • General waste (non-recyclable items)

Firms with fewer than 10 employees will have until March 31st 2027 to comply with this legislation.

At Stephensons, we have a range of products to help your business conform to Simpler Recycling, including our bundle deal of 4 x 70 litre slim recycling bins and the correlating stickers and lids for the main categories listed above. Click here to buy!

What are the benefits of Simpler Recycling?

This is a more thorough approach that will aid the recycling process at waste management facilities, reducing landfill use and the harmful greenhouse gases released when that waste decomposes.

Additionally, this can help to lower carbon emissions by reducing the need for new materials, as well as the processes of landfill incineration that use a lot of energy. Businesses can also benefit from these sustainable practices, as it can help to boost their sustainability reputations.

What if businesses fail to comply?

Businesses that do not follow these new regulations could risk fines and enforcement actions. If you're unclear on how your business can comply with Simpler Recycling, speak to your local council for further information or refer to the DEFRA guidance.
